Queen Victoria Market — Leasing Opportunities in the Heart of Melbourne

What is City Square and the Metro Tunnel Project?

The Metro Tunnel is the largest transformation of Melbourne’s rail network since the City Loop opened in 1982 — connecting the Sunbury, Cranbourne and Pakenham lines under the CBD. Town Hall Station sits at its heart, directly below City Square and steps from Flinders Street.

The City Square development, which sits above Town Hall Station’s main entrance, has been predicted to serve around 10,000 commuters during peak periods. It integrates retail spaces, hospitality venues and event areas. The Urban Developer

The Metro Tunnel project is projected to bring half a million people into the city every week.

Broader Melbourne CBD Foot Traffic (2025–2026 Data)

The most recent published data comes from the City of Melbourne’s Pedestrian Counting System:

Analysis of City of Melbourne pedestrian sensor data recorded 312.9 million pedestrian movements across 99 sensor locations throughout 2025, averaging around 857,000 movements per day. When comparing like-for-like sensor locations across 2025 and 2024, pedestrian movement grew by approximately 1.2 per cent.

Melbourne’s pedestrian activity now peaks at 5 pm rather than during the traditional morning commute, driven by lunch crowds, after-work activity, shopping, dining and events. Weekdays averaged around 865,000 movements per day, with weekends close behind at approximately 838,000.
